Hello everyone. How are you today? Hopefully all is good and still enjoying your summer. Well, its another milestone with 550. For it, i’ll cover a character for this one. Today’s RRF is: ‘Layer’. If i’m covering a character, why not cover a major one from the X series… or as major is being in only one game is. Anyways, Layer appears in Rockman X8 and acts as one of the 3 navigators in the game (I guess Signas thought that Alia could use some help). Layer’s speciality is analyzing enemies and bosses and in reploid and mechaniloid development. For a first time, her advice can be quite useless, especially for bosses. Apart from this, she doesn’t have much in-game use here… at least this way (i’ll cover more of that momentarily). She has a very interesting design, especially with her dark purple hair, purple cape, a white shirt that barely covered her chest and what basically could be the equivalent of Zero’s tighty-whiteys from his own series (this isn’t an M-rated game Capcom… geez). Storyline-wise, she has a little bit more of a character then you may expect. She has a little bit of a thing for Zero, both as a navigator and something a little more it seems. Layer is seen in a few cutscenes to show great concern for Zero’s well-being, as well as blushing hardcore when questioned of such things… especially when the crew are told of how she waited for Zero after missions. Its evident that Zero is aware of this, even asking her to be his navigator at the end of the Jakob Elevator, though i’m sure this is all he intends their relationship to be… after all, Zero’s navigators have a way of ending of dead if they get too close (bad reference i know). Apart from being a navigator, with the help of both completing the game on a few modes and using her alot and cheat codes, Layer is also a playable character. Once she is unlocked, then you have to spend 30000 or 40000 Metals to use her, depending on if you have Metal Discount (I have to pay her to fight?? Good thing the main characters fight for free. I wonder if I can get a tax break on it.) She is quite useful, as she basically serves as a clone to Zero. One of my personal bests in the Intermissions was with Layer. She has her own weapon, the Layer Rapier, which is basically a fencing sword. If you don’t want to use her fencing sword, don’t worry.. save up some metals and she can use all of Zero’s other weapons, including the Sigma Blade. Quite handy. Only thing she can’t do is use the Black Armour, which really is expected. After X8, Layer is never seen again… let’s just hope that if Capcom ever gets around to making an X9, maybe she will re-appear. Overall, she’s a pretty good character, as both a playable character and as a navigator. Hopefully she may re-appear again someday, and hopefully doesn’t flirt too much with Zero. While it was cool in the storyline, i don’t think she wants to end of dead.
